Shoelace size based on shoe size
The length of your shoelaces will depend on the type of shoes you wear and the type of lacing system. Therefore, a shoe size can be different from a shoelace length. The rule of thumb is that if you wear a size 10 shoe, you should have shoelaces that are at least 54 inches (135 cm) long. However, it is better to look at the number of eyelets and use the formula below.
How to tell what size shoelaces you need?
The best way to know which shoelace size you need is to use this length formula: Horizontal space between eyelets (in cm or inch) × Total Eyelets + 22 inch (or 55 cm). Because especially the space between the eyelets differs quite a bit per model and shoe type.
Let’s look at some examples.

Sneaker shoelace length
This sneaker has a horizontal space between the eyelets of 6 cm (2.36 inch). Furthermore, it has 8 eyelets in total.
The calculation is then as follows: 6 x 8 + 55 cm = 103 cm (40.5 inch)
When I measure the shoelace it is exactly this size.

Normal desert shoelace length
This ‘normal desert shoe’ has a horizontal space between the eyelets of 4.5 cm (1.77 inch). Furthermore, it has 6 eyelets in total.
The calculation is then as follows: 4.5 x 6 + 55 cm = 82 cm (32.3 inch)
In this case the shoelace size is 80 cm. So actually slightly smaller. So make sure that you take the average size when you wear the shoe.

Boot shoelace length size
Last but not least, a boot with (7 pairs) 14 eyelets in total. The horizontal space between the eyelets is 6 cm (2.36 inch). However, the width is greater at the top. There it is 8 cm width.
The calculation is as follows: 6 x 14 + 55 cm = 139 cm (55 inch) or 8 x 14 + 55 = 167 cm (66 inch)
Nevertheless, when I measure the shoelace length, the size is 175 cm (69 inch). This has to do with the type of shoe. Hereby, it is also best to measure the bracket height. Then add this to the horizontal width.
Explanation of eyelets pairs
In the table below you can see the shoelace length compared to the amount of eyelet pairs. This is convenient so, you only have to count the number. A pair of eyelets is a group of two eyelets or brackets. So in the example below the shoe has 12 eyelets and thus 6 pair of eyelets.

Lengths of Shoelaces and What They Mean For Your Shoes
Shoelaces are an important part of any shoe. They provide the necessary support to keep your feet comfortable and help you move around freely. The shorter the laces, the more pressure they put on the shoe which can lead to discomfort. If you have narrow feet, then you should go with a shorter lace so that it doesn’t put too much pressure on your toes. If you have wide feet, then longer laces will be more comfortable for you as it will give them some leeway to expand when you walk or run around.
How long should laces be?
Make sure you have at least 20 cm (7.8 inches) extra to tie the laces. Therefore, the most common length is frome from 90 to 100 centimeters (35 to 40 inch). This is a standard length that has been commonly used since the mid-20th century. Furthermore, 120 to 130 centimeters (47 to 50 inch) is standard for a larger shoe with 6 eyelets.
